Portland, OR. This fall, classes from BikeSmart Portland will give cyclists who are new, or even with experience, a chance to brush up on the basics of cycling. Portland has experienced a substantial increase in bike commuters, and has become the national leader in bicycle transportation. This is a chance to connect with those riders to ensure they have the confidence, skills and knowledge to head out on the road. Our mission is to help people learn to ride bicycles safely and develop skills to ride with confidence and strength using logical classroom presentation and practical skill instruction. Our greatest ambition is to help our clients reach their own personal goals within the sport of cycling and enhance the cycling community in Oregon.

Classes will cover a wide range of topics, and be enough information to build excitement and confidence about cycling in Portland. We start with terminology, move on to essential equipment, and then to the skills needed for riding your bike. We also will provide a list of cycling resources. The classes are designed for a new or intermediate cyclist, 18 years and older, with 0-2 years of riding experience. This is also is a great opportunity for riders who have moved to Portland to get up to speed on specific cycling rules of the road in Oregon. Are you on the fence about getting involved in cycling? This is an opportunity for you to learn more about the sport and make an informed decision.

“Living and cycling in Portland, I have personally seen a huge increase in cycling and the statistics are outstanding. The classes are geared towards riders wanting to get up to speed on the basics of cycling,” says Jim Anderson, BikeSmart founder and instructor. “Our goal is to give riders the tools, confidence, and information they need to head out on the road.”

Classes will begin this fall with entry level cycling classes. As riders progress though the classes, more advanced classes will be added for recreational riders and even beginner racers, mountain bikers and more. “Cycling is a way of life in Portland and it’s only getting more popular, yet there are barriers to entering this lifestyle,” reports Russell Cree of Upper Echelon Fitness, a partner of BikeSmart Portland. “Cycling can be very intimidating. Riding in traffic, clipping in and out of pedals, how to shift, going down hills, these things can be intimidating to new cyclists.” The classes at BikeSmart will educate participants on such things, creating confidence to go out and be a part of the cycling community.

The classes are held at Therapeutic Associates, Inc.’s North Portland office at 4829 Martin Luther King Blvd., Suite 101. Portland, OR 97211. Office is located between NE Alberta St. and NE Wygant St. on NE MLK Blvd. There is ample car and bike parking available. Bringing a bicycle to class is not required.

Pre-registration is required through www.bikesmartportland.com. Classes cost $15.00. All classes run an hour and a half with time for Q and A at the end. Classes are from 7:00pm – 8:30pm. In October classes will be held on Tuesdays (21st and 28th) and Thursdays (23rd and 30th).
